Baseball team rallies in time for playoffs before losing in the third round

The Franklin High School baseball team had a slow start to its season going 6-12 in games played from early February through most of April, but then something happened to the team, who up until that point, had hardly showed up on anybody's radar.

As their bats began to heat up, the Panthers managed to put up a win against North Henderson and another against East Henderson, then West Henderson and the wins kept coming. And on Tuesday, the Panthers entered the third round of the NCHSAA 2A state playoffs.

Last week on Wednesday, May 7, the Franklin High School varsity soccer team clinched a piece of the 2A WNCAC championship when they toppled the Tuscola Mountaineers, 3-0.

During the first half of the game, it looked as though it was going to be a defensive battle, but the Lady Panthers turned that idea on its head in the second half when they scored three unanswered goals to take home the win and become co-champions with Tuscola, who won their first meeting.

The win earned the Lady Panthers home field advantage in the first round of the 2A state playoffs when they took on the Chase Trojans yesterday.

The varsity baseball team ended their season with an 11-12 overall record and a 6-8 conference record, but more notably on the momentum of five straight wins.

Last week they beat two conference foes, West Henderson and Tuscola by scores of 7-3 and 7-0.

The late season surge may serve the team well when they travel to Valdese, N.C. to take on the 12-10 Draughn High School Wildcats on Wednesday in the first round of the state playoffs.

Franklin High School senior Erin Campbell committed to play golf at North Greenville University in South Carolina last week, May 1, 2014 at the FHS gym.

During her time as a high school student she made the all-conference team all four years and qualified for the state tournament three of those years. Campbell also plays for the varsity softball team.

North Greenville University is a Division II school that plays in the National Christian College Athletic Associations.
