This past weekend, Franklin High School tennis player Anni Neiss travelled to Raleigh to compete at the State Championship where she made it to the semi-finals before losing out to the eventual State Champion Cassidy Shell of Bandys High School.

“I think she competed really well,” said head coach Heather Bell. “She played a great match against Shell which is not reflected in the score. Many of the games were close and Anni just happened to end up short on more of them than not.”

Franklin High School senior, Erin Campbell began playing golf as a freshman. Four years later, this Monday and Tuesday, she competed at the North Carolina State Championship for 2-A golf at Pinehurst for the second time in her high school career. She has qualified three times, but was unable to compete last year.

On Monday she shot a 93 and on Tuesday a 91, finishing 20th out of 77 golfers.

Before the season kicked off back in August, Campbell said that she just wanted to have a season like the one she had as a junior.

“Last year, three of us qualified for state,” she had said. “I'm just hoping for another good season.”

As the only returning player, the stakes were set high, even if she didn't realize it. Under those circumstances she managed to rise to the occasion more than a few times and she consistently finished with the best scores of the team for Franklin.

MARTINSVILLE, Va. - Who is Mr. Martinsville now?

Jeff Gordon once appeared to own sole possession of that title, but he ceded it to Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jimmie Johnson several years ago. Gordon took a large step toward reclaiming it Sunday when he earned his first win of the season, and the eighth of his career at Martinsville Speedway, by capturing the Goody’s Headache Relief Shot 500.

Gordon made what proved to be the winning pass on Matt Kenseth with 21 laps to go and then held off Kenseth and the rest of the field for the victory. It moved him into third place in the Chase for the Sprint Cup standings, 27 points behind Kenseth and Jimmie Johnson, who are now tied for first with three races remaining in the season.
