The Old Bones Senior Softball team from Franklin, recently beat all competition and won the Hendersonville Senior Softball 65 age group tournament by soundly beating Hendersonville, 12-7; Lake Keowee/ Seneca, 19-7; and Charlotte, 14-11.

Special recognition goes to Walt Taylor who pitched two stellar games holding the competition to only seven runs and Larry Hildreth, who came in from his normal outfield position to hold the powerful Charlotte team to only 11 runs in the final tie breaking game.

Olympic silver medalist and Western Carolina University alumni Manteo Mitchell brought a whole new meaning to his motivational phrase Faith, Focus and Finish during last Thursday's 4x400 meter relay Olympic Trial race.

The former Catamount Track and Field standout had 200 meters to go in the first leg of the 4x400-meter relay preliminaries when he heard a “pop.” With his relay partner cheering him on to hand off the baton, Mitchell fought through the pain and finished his leg of the race.

Mitchell limped to the side of the track and watched his team tie for first with the team from the Bahamas with a time of 2:58.87. After the race, Team USA announced that Mitchell's left fibula cracked midway through his stretch of the race forcing him to finish the last 200 meters of the race with a broken leg.

The “Swarm” age 12 and under local baseball team comprised of players from Rabun County, Georgia and Macon County, North Carolina, recently travelled to the United States Specialty Sports Association World Series in Pensacola, Fla. The week-long double elimination World Series featured State Tournament Championship teams from all over the country. The “Swarm” with a record of 6-2 for the series captured fourth place out of this field of exceptional ball clubs. The team finished the season ranked sixth nationally in the USSSA rankings which is comprised of almost 3000 teams in their 12AA division and placed 2nd in the Georgia State rankings.

Western Carolina University alumni taking Olympics by storm

The Games of the XXX Olympiad being held in London has 204 countries from across the globe fighting to earn a place in history. The United States of America sent 529 athletes to London with a record number: 268 women and 261 men.

Of the 261 men who have been deemed the best athletes in the country, one of Team USA is a graduate of Western Carolina University (WCU). Manteo Mitchell, a 2009 graduate of WCU, broke numerous records as a member of the Catamount Track team. Mitchell was sent to London as a part of the pool of runners who qualified to compete in the men's 4 X 400 meter relay race.
