Battle of Cowee Mountain rages as players sign up.

Former Franklin and Smoky Mountain High School students will take to the gridiron Dec. 8 for the first-ever fundraising alumni football game. Historically deemed “The Battle of Cowee Mountain,” the ageold rivalry will raise money for both schools.

Mike Murphy and John Owen have organized the game as team coordinators for the organization’s Alumni Football USA (AFUSA). Murphy said the goal of the game is to raise funds for both schools while giving former players the chance to reconnect on the football field.

Franklin Panthers won the Battle of Cowee Mountain with a score of 40-7, with the Panthers scoring touchdowns on the first three possessions.

It was the third straight victory for the Franklin Panthers bumping their record to 3-0 in the conference and 5-2 overall.

Ranked 10th in the state, East Henderson took out the Franklin Panthers, 4-0, in Monday’s game.

The Panthers lost 7-4 to Smoky Mountain in overtime on Sept. 17; North Henderson 1-0 on Wednesday and Highlands, 2-1 on Thursday.

Coach Ken Neitz said, “We played some pretty decent soccer, but it wasn’t good enough. Hopefully, this week will make us stronger and help us the rest of the way during conference play.”
