Franklin High School basketball hit the road again as they met the Smoky Mountain Mustangs for a second time this season on Tuesday, Jan. 29.

The second ranked Lady Panthers, who were coming off 82-50 and 70-27 wins over Brevard and Swain County were able to keep the momentum going as they blasted Smoky, 63-42. They now move to 12-2 overall.

The fifth ranked men's basketball team saw their two game winning streak come to an end as the Mustangs handed the team their sixth loss of the season, moving them to a 13- 6 record overall. Down by four points at half-time, they were never able to overcome the deficit, eventually losing 61-48.

The Franklin High School Dance Team wrapped up their first year last Saturday as they performed alongside Western Carolina University's Dance Team during the home game against UNC-Greensboro. With the first season down in the FHS history books, the first-ever dance team went from idea to success in just one year.

According to FHS Dance Team Coach Jennifer Turner-Lynn, she reached out to WCU's Dance Team last spring to solicit their help in starting a team at Franklin High School. “The WCU coaching staff and athletes have been instrumental in assisting Franklin in starting this dance program and have been wonderful about helping us with choreography and technique,” said Turner-Lynn.

With wrestlers out with the flu and injuries plaguing the Franklin team, West Henderson dominated the Panthers with Franklin tallying only one pin in the heavyweight class scored by Tristan Longworth. The final score was 61-15.

The Panthers are now 8-5 overall and 0-2 in the WNC Athletic Conference in dual matches.

With five matches to go in the conference, Coach Chris DiLuzio says the ultimate goal is the region and state tournaments.

Wresting coach Chris DiLuzio reported the results of Friday’s wrestling match against Hayesville. The Dual Meet Score was Franklin 39.0, Hayesville, 27.0. Tristan Longworth, James Watson and Jackson Roper won by pin; Chris Richards won by tech fall; and Dustin Smith won by major decision.

Last Saturday the team went to Greeneville, Tenn. for an individual tournament. James Watson and Chris Richards took 3rd; Jackson Roper took 2nd; and Jimmy Briggs took 1st, his 3rd tournament win in a row. Conference began this week and the team wrestles West Henderson at home Friday at 6 p.m.
